Best Practices

Domain Management

  • Start with core competitors - Add 5-10 primary competitors first

  • Use top-level domains - Let subdomain inclusion work for you

  • Include job sites - Add LinkedIn, Indeed with competitor name searches

  • Regular reviews - Update list quarterly as competitive landscape changes

  • Remove stale entries - Clean up defunct competitors or completed M&A targets

Privacy and Compliance

  • Notify employees - Ensure transparency about browser monitoring

  • Document policies - Include in acceptable use policies

  • Limit access - Restrict who can view browser history data

  • Retention policies - Define how long data is stored

  • Legal review - Consult legal team on privacy implications

Analysis and Response

  • Context matters - Consider job roles before acting on data

  • Look for patterns - Single visits are less concerning than frequent access

  • Combine signals - Cross-reference with other security events

  • Document investigations - Keep records of findings and actions taken

  • Proportional response - Match intervention to risk level

Creating Alerts and Detections

Enhance monitoring with custom detections:

Example Detection: Frequent Competitor Visits

Configuration:

  • Navigate to Browser History dashboard
  • Create Detection
  • Filter: Domain = [competitor list]
  • Filter: User Visit Count > 10 per week
  • Name: "Frequent Competitor Website Visits"

Example Detection: After-Hours Career Page Access

Configuration:

  • Filter: Domain = career pages
  • Filter: Time = Outside 9 AM - 5 PM
  • Name: "After-Hours Competitor Career Site Access"
